Chapter Fourteen

Ben sat down.

Molly marched behind him and took the sofa opposite her husband.

“Do you have any Elsenham?” Ben swiveled his chair from side to side, as if he were trying it on for size. “I prefer it room temp.”

“Why would I have your favorite English bottled water in my hotel room? I didn’t know you were coming, remember?” If I had I would have called security.

“No? Wow, I thought you liked it too?”

“I don’t.”

“Oh.” Ben stopped fidgeting and looked down at the floor.

Ben always did that gathering himself thing when he was going to lecture someone, or as he liked to think of it, ‘share his experience.’

This was a bad idea, letting him in here. Really bad. I look like hell and my feet hurt. I’m not thinking coherently because I’m exhausted and jet lagged and hungry.

Suddenly Molly panicked. What if the paparazzi spotted Ben coming into the hotel? God, a whole new avalanche of rumors would begin.

“Did anyone see you coming in here tonight?” she demanded.

“You mean the press?” Ben shook his head. “Nope. My driver brought me in through underground parking. Manager took me up the freight elevator. And I tipped him well to keep his mouth shut and his hand off the ‘send’ text button on his phone.” He reached across and patted her knee before she could move. “You worry too much.”

“It’s been a freaking circus with the photographers. They practically knocked me down pushing on the front door in Santa Barbara.”

“I heard about that. Sorry, babe. It’s been wild for us, I mean for me, too.” Ben laced his hands together.

Us.

Humiliation boiled in her stomach. He’s baiting me to bring up Daniela, she thought. Molly clenched her teeth. Hell if I’ll sink low enough to ask him about that woman. This get–together ambush was his freaking idea; he can be the director.

“People think movie stars have it easy. Boy, are they wrong.” Ben smiled.

“Yeah, life’s a bitch, and then you marry one. Isn’t that the way it goes?”

“Molly,” he said in a wounded voice. “I’d never call you a bitch.”

“Why are you here?”

Ben blinked. “First, would you please tell me how Norma’s doing?”

“Why don’t you call and ask her yourself?”

“I did, or at least, I tried to. I called the house in Santa Barbara yesterday and Marta said she was back in the hospital. Has she,” he paused, “relapsed?”

“No. She’s suffering from anemia from the chemo. She’ll probably go home tomorrow.”

“Good, good.” His eyes reddened. “God, Moll, you’ve had your hands full, haven’t you? Us. Your mom. The press and the studio guys snapping at you. I’m so sorry…”

Molly stood. She’d heard this same crap a few weeks ago when she went to visit him in Canada and he told her how much he wanted to work on their marriage.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, it’s not happening buddy.

“Tell me what you want or leave.” She took two steps toward the door. “I mean it. I’m not up for a rehash
